Can I e-file my 2009 tax return now?

By Bureaupat Jan 14 2010, 06:23 AM

Dear Bureaupat,

My spouse and I just got our W-2's and we're ready to file since we expect to get a nice refund.   Can we e-file now or do we have to wait?

Dear Anxious,

You all must feel really good about your refund.  Unfortunately, many of us who owe Uncle Sam or are just procrastinators are holding off until April 15th.

The good news for you is that according to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), you can file your income tax online now using one of the several off the shelf tax preparing programs.  They're a quick, easy, and safe way to file and you'll get your return significantly earlier than those who paper file.

I'm not sure if you fall in this category, but for many taxpayers with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $56,000 or less, there is Free File, where you can file for free as early as January, 15, 2010.

According to the IRS, Free File will be up and running on January 15th and provides free federal income tax preparation and electronic filing through a partnership between the IRS and the Free File Alliance LLC, a group of private sector tax software companies.

If you are eligible for Free File, carefully review the descriptions of the free offers before starting your return because individual company offers may be limited to specific states and income levels.

Additionally, each company has a description of their eligibility criteria for preparing and e-filing your federal tax return for free.

Remember, when choosing a company, be sure to link to the company's website through the IRS. If you go directly to a company's website, you may not get the free service.

For more information, please visit the IRS's Free File: Frequently Asked Questions web page.

Yours in Gov,

Bureaupat
