14 iPad Apps To Make Your Government Job Easier

By Lauren Reisig Jun 06 2010, 05:07 PM

Apple's iPad has only been on the market for two months, and it is already beginning to revolutionize mobile computing. The iPad combines the functions of a laptop with the design and technology of the iPhone. Most importantly, iPad owners can download applications to satisfy their personal and professional needs.

Thousands of apps have already been developed specifically for the iPad, with new apps being added to the iTunes Apps store daily.  Way back when, OhMyGov.com examined the 11 iPhone apps to make your government job easier, and now that the iPad has been unveiled, it's time to see how the offerings for Apple's latest toy measure up.

Here now, a list of iPad apps that are designed for government workers, political junkies and citizens looking to stay connected. At the very least, they'll make you appear hipper than your laptop-toting colleagues...

For the world traveler...

The World Factbook for iPad ($1.99) - This mobile reference tool made popular on the iPhone is now available for the iPad. The Factbook contains relevant statistics and facts on 250 countries, with information including maps, geography, government, economy, military, and transnational issues.  Another perk: the app is available offline, perfect for any last minute, in-flight research.

iCurrency Pad, the Currency Exchange Rates Converter ($0.99) - Want to know how far your per diem will go when you travel? The iCurrency Pad offers over 150 currency exchange rates, and has received consistently high ratings. Not a fan of this particular app? There are over 10 apps with currency conversion functions from which to choose.

Foreign Language Dictionaries and Translators (Various Prices, Free-$18.99) - Afrikaans. French. German. Italian. Spanish. Russian. The list goes on.  With everything from talking phrases to compact dictionaries, it's easy to find a foreign language translator to fit your needs.  Buyer beware: don't waste money on the translator with voice apps.  The only consistency among these products is the poor reviews they receive.

International Diplomacy ($1.99) - Impress your international colleagues with your detailed knowledge of past and present diplomatic issues and treaties.  Whether you're looking to reference the Camp David Accords for a Middle East peace conference or look up the specific Kyoto Protocol emissions reduction numbers, consider this app an ally for your international diplomacy research needs.

For the paralegal...

iLawLibrary ($6.99) - This app provides instant, offline access to the Federal Rules of Evidence and the Federal Rules of Criminal, Civil, Bankruptcy, and Appellate Procedure.  Just don't spend $50 to translate the legalese with Black's Law Dictionary app.

State statutes and penal codes (Various, avg. $4.99) - Contains searchable penal codes and statutes for states from New York to Alaska.  Most apps are available offline, and are a great reference tool for state government employees or anyone in need of up-to-date information on state laws.

For the inner spy...

iSpy Cameras ($0.99) - People-watching for the 21st Century! This internationally-popular app allows users to view and control public video cameras around the world.  This is the perfect app to snoop, "observe," or whatever you want to call it....

For the teleworker...

Citrix Receiver for iPad (FREE) - The perfect app for anyone with Citrix on their work computer, this app enables users to access their desktop directly from their iPad.  For those without Citrix, try Dropbox.

Dropbox (FREE) - Frustrated that you don't have Citrix and can't access work from your iPad?  As long as the iPad is connected to the internet, Dropbox allows you to access Dropbox files on a user's other computers.

Todo for iPad ($4.99) - There are numerous organization apps available for the iPad, but with Microsoft Outlook synching capabilities, Todo for iPad is the way to go. Though some of the features require Internet connectivity, this app is well worth the money and a must-have for any multi-tasker.

For the legislative analyst...

MyCongress (FREE) - Gov 2.0 has revolutionized the way citizens follow their representatives, and now MyCongress is the easiest way to track Congressional officials through the iPad.  The app allows users to monitor elected officials' news, video, and Twitter feeds.

U.S. Code (FREE) - Have the entire U.S. Code at your fingertips with this app.  There are still some kinks to work out, but if you conduct research on the U.S. Code for your job, you may as well download it.  Why?  Because it's free.

Manual for the United States of America ($1.99) - The manual is essentially a basic U.S. history and government education wrapped up in an app.  The manual contains important and relevant U.S. documents ranging from the Declaration of Independence to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Though many other apps providing information on the Land of the Free are, in fact, free, the manual is a useful reference tool, and depending on the frequency of use, likely worth the $2 price tag.

Government Spending, iPad edition - This app is broken.  Enough said.
